A one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic vase featuring a fantastical sea unicorn painted entirely in layers of interacting glaze. The horned creature winds around the lower half of the vessel beneath abstract celestial forms, shifting from cream and pale blue to green, gold, and rust as the glazes melt together in the kiln.

The wheel-thrown vase has a tall, dramatic silhouette with a rounded base, narrow waist, and flared rim. Deep brown glaze provides the backdrop for the hand-painted imagery, while warm bronze and rust tones emerge throughout the surface and interior.

Rather than sitting on top of the finished ceramic, each image is created directly with ceramic glazes before firing. Heat transforms the original painting as the glazes flow, overlap, and react, leaving softened edges, unexpected color changes, and details that can never be reproduced exactly.

Inspired by medieval bestiaries, mythical creatures, celestial imagery, and the strange animals that inhabit old manuscripts and decorative objects, this vase is both a functional vessel and a one-of-a-kind ceramic object.

Individually thrown, painted, glazed, and fired by hand.
